Optimizing to Future-proof your Web Site
Optimizing means to make your site load faster. This term is not the same as “Search Engine Optimization,” which means tweaking the site so that search engine spiders/ robots find it and rank it highly.
Site Optimization consists of the following:
- Checking links (to ensure that they function)
- Checking tags (to ensure that they are:)
- Matched, closed and nested correctly
- Suppored in target browsers
- Current, not tags that were depricated by the W3C
- Ensuring that you didn't copy HTML code from MS Word™, leaving a mess
- Cleaning up any forms so that they are legible
- Compressing graphic images to ensure that they are legible, but download quickly
Tools for Optimizing your Site
Checking HTML or XHTML by hand with a simple text editor such as MS Notepad™ is possible, but unrealistic.
